I bought my horse Shilo, one year ago and she was in ruff shape. She had ribs showing along with many black scars and bad hooves. Everyone thought she was a rescue. The people I bought her from didn't have enough space or help for her. Shilo is a 7 year old Thourghbred, Quarter Horse, Strawberry Roan mare. Which means, she is white with red hair speckled all over. She is 16 hands 2 inches tall and has had a baby already. A horse.s health is first seen in their hooves, if they're dry and cracked and/or so soft they buckle, they end up getting way to sore for the horse to stand on. Also, the leg bone can become dissconnected to the hoof which is extreamly serious and painful.
Shilo's hooves were bad enough that she was put in horse shoes immediatly. She was also given a good wormer, higher quality hay and grain and a pasture with green grass. All her black scars were also a big concern to me and it turned out that over the winter, with better food and Finish Line's Feet First nutritional suppliment, the scars went away. I knew that her winter coat would cover the scars but I wondered if they would reappear again in the spring. Well, they didn't reapear. It turns out that Shilo's coat was now strong and thick enough to cover all her skin and scars the way a healthy horse's coat should! It just goes to show how important high quality nutrition is.
It takes a year to grow out the bad hooves and replace them with new healthy growth and I documented the year with photos. My husband's company, Finish Line, was working on new advertisments and had other photos of hooves growing out better, but it turns out that one of Shilo's hoof photos was the best one!
I don't think this photo is going to make my horse famous, but it's still nice to show how good nutrition can help. Right now, Shilo has recovered so well, she's out of her shoes and being a happy healthy horse! I just need to keep up with her!
